Rise in job seekers relocating for employment
created on Tuesday 27th September 2011

A guide to the key things to consider for any relocation abroad as figures show that an increasing amount of people consider the benefits of relocation.

A recent survey, produced by consulting firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, has revealed that 9.4% of job seekers relocated for new jobs in the first half of 2011.

This figure represented a rise from 7.6% during the same period last year. It also suggests that as the global economy becomes increasingly fragile and employment is difficult to find, many people are beginning to consider the benefits of relocation.

So what are the most pivotal issues to consider when planning an international relocation?

One of the main things to consider is that you will probably face difficult choices over a multitude of issues including electrical appliances, pets and clothing, but remember that you cannot take it all with you.

The key is to be selective and use common sense. For example, consider what type of clothing you are likely to need before piling everything into the suitcase.

Relocating abroad can be an expensive business. If you can find the time to budget in advance of your move it could be particularly beneficial. That way you can make sure the money goes where it needs to.

Do not forget to factor in any potential differences in the cost of living for your destination. Your company may help with this but it is always best to be prepared, work expenses may not necessarily cover every aspect of your move.

It is also important to learn as much as you can about your new destination before you depart. Any changes, however intricate, in custom or culture may prove crucial as you adjust to your new surroundings and attempt to fit in with the native population. It will also help you to avoid any major culture shocks when you arrive.

The key thing is to be prepared for the specific demands of your employment and the area you are relocating to.

Relocation consultants can help you with several aspects of the move including advice over storage and financial issues.
