A guide to the key considerations when carrying out an international relocation with your work
Any international relocation is bound to bring challenges and complications which you may not have encountered before.
It is a big step to take, regardless of whether or not your company give you any say in the decision, and you must thoroughly research your destination before setting off.
But what are the most important things to consider for an international relocation as opposed to one which means you will remain in the country? What are the most important things to consider in order to integrate into your new life?
Surroundings and climate – The climate is not always the first issue people consider when relocating overseas, but it can be a surprisingly contentious factor for many. For example, going from the UK to somewhere such as India puts different demands on your skin and your body. Eventually, both will adjust but there is likely to be a transitional period where you will need to take on regular fluids and pay attention to any potential changes in your health/appearance.
Language – It is an obvious hurdle, but one that people often fail to prepare correctly for. Many people will immerse themselves into phrasebooks before a relocation overseas, but that might not give you the specific language skills you need. Instead, try to learn phrases and words specific to your line of work. This will give you an edge and hopefully allow you to hit the ground running when you arrive at your new place of work.
Culture – Again, there could be any number of cultural differences that you need to learn, without the necessary time to get through them all. Try to learn the key differences that you might need to know in the office or the workplace. This kind of pre-planning could be the difference between a great introduction to your new colleagues, or a highly embarrassing incident that you struggle to overcome.
