Potential Relocation: Where does my family fit in
created on Friday 12th August 2011

Studying the idea of how you can fit your personal life around a proposed business relocation plan.

In uncertain economic times, people will go to greater lengths than normal to keep their job.

Taking a voluntary pay-cut, working unpaid overtime and giving up health/dental insurance benefits are just some of the things that employees may be asked to do in order to stay with a company.

However, more and more businesses are waking up to the fact that relocating members of staff (possibly even to another country) can be a cost effective and practical long term solution.

There are a number of practical considerations which have to be considered with such a move though.

From the business point of view, the issues are obvious and bearable.

But from a personal point of view there is a complex multitude of issues to consider, not least of those is how the move affects your family.

Attempting to adjust to new surroundings which will include a new home, new schools and an entirely different social circle can be a real challenge.

Soroya Bacchus, a noted psychiatrist, has looked into the idea of how relocation can impact on a family unit.

She suggests that the best thing to do is to “make a master plan, a master to-do list, prioritise tasks and set reasonable goals for their completion”.

She also discusses the idea of not being afraid to ask for help. “Reach out to friends and business contacts in the new location. They may have great suggestions, and you might not actually have to re-invent the wheel.”

You may not always get a choice in terms of relocation. Sometimes a business will offer it as an incentive or as perhaps as a bonus for recent good performance.

The reality though is that the majority of staff relocations these days are enforced as a company looks to expand or simply survive in a difficult economy.

The main thing is that you can be ready either way. The key is to be prepared to adapt to change, wherever your work may take you.
